What is Salvation?

Salvation is a free gift of God and in Bible it refers to new birth or born-again or saving experience of sinners (John 1: 13, John 3: 3 & 7, Acts 16:31 & Romans 10: 9). According to Bible, everybody born in this world is a sinner and has committed numerous sins. Sins are wrong doings like lying, cheating, stealing, committing adultery, sexual abuse, committing murder, etc. to name a few. As we reflect on our past, we can recollect how we started sinning right from our childhood. As we grew up, we continued to commit sins and continue to live in sin. One day we will all die. After our death, we will have to stand before the judgement seat of God. The punishment for sinning is spending eternity in the lake of fire where we will be burning and suffering but will not die. Only people who are holy (completely without sin) go to heaven to be with God for eternity. There is no way anyone born in this world can be sinless. The only way to get to heaven is to pay the penalty for sin which is death. History shows that Jesus paid the penalty for us in full when he died for our sins on the cross. Even though He is God, He became man, lived a sinless life, died in our place on the cross by bearing our sins and rose from death victoriously on the third day. Since He paid our penalty in full which we cannot do, He is able to offer you eternal life with Him in heaven.

For you to receive this free gift of salvation, you have to acknowledge that you are a sinner, confess your sins and put your trust in LORD Jesus Christ.

Below are the basic biblical truths about salvation.

  1. All human beings are sinners by nature and deserve God’s just punishment for their sins which is eternal hell (Romans 1:18, Romans 3:11-12, Romans 3:23, John 3:36 & Mathew 10:28).

Romans 3:11-12 – There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Mathew 10:28 – And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2. God because of His great love towards human beings made a way for sinners to be forgiven of their sins. This was possible by sending his only begotten son Jesus Christ into this world as a human being and paying the penalty for our sins on the cross of calvary (John 3:16-18, Romans 5:6 & 8, 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:2 & 1 John 4:9).

John 3: 16-18 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

2 Corinthians 5: 21 – For he (God) hath made him (Jesus Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 John 4: 9 – In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

3. Sinners will be saved by believing in Jesus Christ and His redemptive work on the cross of calvary (Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9, 1 John 1:8-9, Acts 2:38, 1 John 4:9, Acts 2:21 & John 1: 12). Believing leads to salvation and it involves

  • Accepting/admitting the fact that we are sinners by nature and deserve God’s punishment or wrath
  • Believing in Lord Jesus Christ and his loving redemptive work on the cross of calvary
  • Confessing our sins and seeking God’s grace/mercy to enlighten our understanding to wholeheartedly accept the gospel of Jesus Christ through genuine repentance

Acts 16:31 – And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Romans 10: 9 – That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

1 John 1: 8-9 – If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
